Is Club Soccer on the Decline?

Soccer enthusiasts need not worry about the state of soccer, as it appears that its appeal among United States’ youth will remain strong for years to come.

MLS is Growing

The New York Times issued an article in 2010 after the World Cup, stating that soccer in the United States is experiencing steady growth.  This in large part was due to the United States thrilling run into the second round of the World Cup.

The MLS has also continued to experience growth in popularity as MLS clubs have been able to bring in highly popular stars such as Thiere Henry and David Beckham, moves that continued to increase American’s interest in the game.

Parents are Weary of the Dangers with Football

The continued risks that are being revealed for young athletes participating in soccer’s biggest rival, football have also given soccer’s popularity a boost.  Fueled by statements made by Kurt Warner who said that he is not sure whether he wants his kids to play football due to its violent nature, more parents are beginning to realize the long term risks associated with their kids playing the highly dangerous sport.

As a result of this increasing sentiment, it can be easily anticipated that more families will look to discourage their children from playing football and will look to other sports that posses far less risk.  Due to school teams playing soccer and football at the same time, it is easy to predict that more kids will be pushed towards soccer in the coming years, giving club soccer a further boost in popularity.

Rise of Hispanic Immigrants

One other issue that will continue to grow club soccer’s popularity is the growing number of Hispanic immigrants who are residing in the United States.  In a report issued by the Goshen News, coaches have seen Hispanics participate in school soccer programs in record numbers.  Due to the rising number of Hispanics in many communities, their passion for soccer will continue to push the sports popularity among American youth.

Competition for College Scholarships

With the increased number of athletes playing soccer each year, the prized soccer scholarship is becoming more elusive each year.  As players from diverse backgrounds continue to take an increased interest in the game of soccer, the competition for scholarships will continue to rise.  As a result, players who are looking for a leg up on their competition will increasingly look to club soccer programs as the way to provide that much needed edge.

The news is positive for soccer as a whole in the United States.  With the rising number of athletes playing soccer and the growth in popularity of the professional game, it is safe to say that club soccer’s popularity will continue to grow in the coming years as more athletes begin to appreciate the many benefits associated with this great game.
