Scorpions Soccer Club

Background

Scorpions Soccer Club (formerly South Coast Scorpion Soccer Club) was the result of a merger in 2000 that brought the Scorpions soccer Club and the South Coast Girls Soccer Club together. [The 'South Coast' regional name was abandoned at the end of the 2006 Spring season.]

Scorpions Soccer was recently ranked #20 in the United States by national publication Soccer America.

While the Scorpions are based in Braintree, Massachusetts the Club covers two areas. The Braintree home is the original base and continues to this day while the Scorpions West has new roots in the Millis and Hopkinton areas. Most players live in areas south of Boston but they have players from all over Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Maine.

Scorpions Soccer teams play in the Massachusetts Premier League (MAPLE), Massachusetts Area Soccer Clubs (MASC), Region 1 Premier League, and Elite Clubs National League (ECNL).

Scorpions usually have many teams in each  age grouping. The top team in each age group is referred to as the Elite team, while the second and third teams in each age grouping are referred to as the Premier and Club teams, respectively.

The Scorpions Soccer Club has separate boys and girls youth training groups. They are both known as ‘Juniors’ pools. See below.

Scorpions and NEFC are rumored to merge soon; not really a merger as NEFC much larger and to assume the club and Scorpions organization.

Club Composition

Scorpions Soccer typically has multiple teams in most age groups. The ‘top’ team in each age group is referred to as the ‘Elite’ or ‘ECNL’ team, while the second and third teams in each age group are referred to as the ‘Premier’ and ‘Club’ teams, respectively.

The Elite/ECNL teams strive to be among the top in the region (and nation). Scorpions teams have won state and regional championships, league championships and tournaments such as Jefferson Cup (VA), FC Delco (PA), PDA (NJ), Score at the Shore (NY), and WAGS (VA/MD).

The Scorpions have 19 boys teams and 26 girls teams; the club also has a Scorpions Soccer Club West (SSC West) consisting of 12 teams plus a junior academy.

While kids start as young 5 years old the typical age is 7-9 years old. The cost for the Junior pool is ~ $995 and certainly subject to change; this is just the basics and each tournament is extra.

The fall and spring outdoor training is usually at Thayer fields, 1515 Washington Street, Braintree during weeknights. Indoor training is held at Thayer Academy school, Marshfield HS and South Shore Fieldhouse, Pembroke.

Website

  • The website for the Scorpions is a bit outdated as menus seem redundant and some just have blank pages.
  • Users will find the site a little confusing trying to differentiate between SSC West and the regular club.
  • Each time a page loads the Scorpions banner at the top of the page rolls in.
  • Site doesn’t do a good job of listing in one place all the clinics and camps available then allowing the user to get more information; users must search around.
  • For a club ranked #20 in the United States the site’s not very impressive.
  • No “search” feature allowing users to look for information quickly.
  • “Blog” section has nothing in it.
  • Some outdated information on certain pages.

I expected more comments on the Scorpions as emotions run deep on both sides; many people are very passionate about the Scorpions.

You may find helpful and article I wrote here on MassClubSoccer that highlights the Scorpions. Please see the article here:

I have belonged to this club and find it to be very good for my kid. I think they could do a more comprehensive job at developing younger players. Trainers are good and would like to see greater number of practices.

Terible club – I pulled my kid halfway through. Player development is horrible especially when you consider how much they charge. They club leader is a tyrant and egomaniac.

    • Jim Peverly says:

The club leader is actually not a bad guy, just needs to lear to be a little more personable like some of his top coaches.

Be careful with this club. Know who the coach is before you commit. They hired a girl out of college who never coached before and couldn’t relate to kids. She was demeaning to many girls on the team, swore during games, and gave negative comments during practices. Not someone who you want your kid coached by after all the $$ you spend on this club. The club leader ignored everything. Very disappointing. We pulled our kid out too halfway through. Other coaches are better. Beware. Get background info. on the coaches before you register! You have to fight for a refund.

blah, blah, blah, no I don’t hate this club but i HEAR more stories of just nuts over / down (?) there; then i hear rumors of either them buying a club or being bought by a club – just seems so unsecure. I’m happy i never committed to ths club!

My daughter and son played for the Scorpiions for several years and since Keith Caldwell has left the club has been below average at best. they seem to only care about the ECNL teams and all other teams are about the money. The coaching is not very deep once you get past the top 2 coaches on both the girls and boys side as opposed to the NEFC or the FC Stars and other clubs. The facilities they practice at are in horrible condition in Braintree with the exception of Thayer. Their Summer camp is at one of the schools on a field with dead grass and is very poorly run with no real trainng to speak of. it’s really to bad to watch what was once such a good club become below average, what ever Caldwell was getting paid he was worth it, he was always responsive to calls and E Mails.
