Valeo Futbol Club (VFC)

Background

Valeo FC is a club soccer organization which calls Newton its home; the club is not associated with the town and they take soccer players from anywhere in Mass. They play in the Northeast Soccer League (NSL) and the Massachusetts Soccer Conference (MASC).

In December 2015 they took Vitoria FC under their wing as an affiliate program. This new relationship will afford both clubs a wider geographical base; another benefit to the increased size is that it will strengthen the player pool, talent, and coaching staff.

Team selection is a process that is very competitive with teams being formed based on geographic area (not sure if this takes place over skill level).

Players for Valeo FC, like many club soccer players, consider club soccer to be their only sport and are very serious about improving their soccer game.

Valeo FC has paid professional coaches holding various coaching licenses and are responsible for determining position and playing time.

Players usually train about three times per week from late August thru early June; winter training takes on a less formal schedule but nonetheless just as important to keep players in shape and improve their development.

Club Composition

Valeo FC offers teams from U7 thru U18. At the younger stage the training is strictly developmental allowing the player to become familiar with the game of soccer and handling the ball; as they move along in the program they focus on more competitive play and tactical concepts are introduced; older kids start to get more exposure to regional and national clubs/teams.

The club trains all year round (starts in July) with, typical of most Mass club programs, four sessions: Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring.

Valeo FC club fees are about $2,700.

Tournaments

Valeo FC tries to enter tournaments that fit best to their available age groups; some of the tournaments may be inter-league and others may be sponsors by other clubs. Typically, they will participate in three or more tournaments.

For the younger groups (U14 and under) they usually enter three tournaments held on Labor Day, Memorial Day, and an early spring Ice Breaker tournament. The U15 and older do all this except the Labor Day one.

  2. Most coaches have experience with profetional leagues and strive to make players the best they can. Every player developes a grand amount and improves a lot by bothe technical and physical ways. The facilities are the best around. Tge overall value is 5 stars.

  3. Valeo Futbol Club is a very good club that helps players develop all soccer skills at the highest level. They provide an indoor turf field, indoor futsal court, and a full 11v11 field. The coaching is one of the best in the state and almost every team progresses grandly. Coaches focus on player development and team development and overall to win and have fun at the same time.

  4. This club has been a real good club for my son and I thank it a lot. He is now getting scouted by various clubs and some colleges.

  5. Like most club soccer programs, Valeo focuses heavily on its top talent. If your son is able to play on the top level team in his age group then Valeo is a good investment. He will get the best coaches, the most respect, the most attention, and if you are smart he may not have to pay full price. Unfortunately, and also like most club programs, the second through fourth team players are afforded much less respect and resources.

In spite of language to the contrary, there is no escalator or path from the lower tiered teams to the top tiered teams. The Valeo strategy is to build at the top by recruiting top talent, and by expanding their market in order to do so. It’s a good strategy, but it leaves the rest of the families to subsidize the program while thinking, mistakenly, that their son is being trained to play competitive club soccer. Valeo just doesn’t deliver that product.

You will not be told what team your son will play on until you agree to pay the year’s tuition, thus ensuring that if your son is put in the cargo hold at Valeo you will be paying first class rates. My suspicion is that in their efforts to expand their market for top tier, gifted young players they are either attracting players who cannot afford Valeo, or promising free rides up front, and thus need more paying customers to whom they can’t deliver – a tough predicament.

This plays out at practice, where the treatment and care given to the young players is obviously and shamelessly tiered differently, to the games, which are organized to different degrees depending on the tier your son is in. Top tier teams play on schedule with on-time refs and a couple good coaches, whereas low-tier team families may drive an hour to get to a game where no referee arrived, a substitute coach gets there late, and only four rostered players show up: sorry, the game is cancelled.

You do have options: a season of private coaching (there are numerous options) will probably get your son more teaching and attention than a season at Valeo, and most importantly will likely add to his confidence level and likelihood of sticking with soccer instead of stripping it.

  6. My son has played on the team for three years. The club has had great success with their teams and continues to grow and improve. They try to find the best tournaments and opportunities for the players. Parents are involved and it is a great community. The boys play together consistently and build bonds on and off the field. This is in contrast to MPS/GPS, where teams were put together on an ad hoc basis each week and there was very little cohesion. Strongly recommend Valeo if your son / daughter loves soccer.

We have been very disappointed with the girls program. The coach is very cold and distant, never seems to have interest in individual players except a few of her favorites. The club expanded the girls program too quickly without enough competent coaching staff to support.

  9. Coaches are former pros and they have their own facilities…they don’t mess around with soft suburban soccer, they train hard and often recruiting immigrants from around the Bosotn area, and regularly attend tournaments in New York, LAs Vegas, and Virginia. Several VFC players have gone on to play for the New England Revolution academy teams and Division 1 colleges. If you go there you will improve rapidly!!!
